The Pursuit of Democracy – an Active Participatory Tour

Book a visit for your group that focuses on the concept of democracy and reflect about it in “slow looking” at the House of European History’s collection objects. This visit is available in English, French, German and Dutch, lasts approximately 90 minutes and is based on public participation following the “Visible Thinking Method”.
Why a guided tour about Democracy?
The tour helps your group to discover the significance of democracy in Europe's history. This guided tour goes beyond the surface — visitors will build connections with all facets of democracy, for example through:
- Gaining insights into the idealism of democratic theories, their limits when put into practice and their current meaning.
- Travelling through revolutions for equality, exploring the significant uprisings.
- Witnessing the evolution of democratic regimes in Europe and the world.
- Understanding the actions of Europeans to make their voice heard.
- Finally, assessing European democracy and imagining its future.
Why an active participatory tour?
Democracy is not just a historical concept but a living and evolving idea shaped by people.
Through the Visible Thinking Method, visitors actively contribute to the tour, sharing perspectives and thoughts, creating a collective understanding of democracy that transcends individual experiences.
The guides operating at the House of European History have been trained to use Visible Thinking as a facilitation method. The guides establish a set of routines that include series of questions and sequences of steps, used to support visitors’ thinking processes, as well as generating curiosity and exchanges in the group. By encouraging visitors to make observations, sharing them and finding personal connections with the object and the ideas it represents, the routines allow a more profound engagement with our collection.

- To provide an intimate and engaging experience, the maximum group size is set at 15 people. If you have a larger group, we offer the flexibility to divide it into smaller groups.
